Comment: Large language models in peer review — tool, not replacement
8 March 2025
Prof. Francesca Moore and Prof. A. Suleiman examine the emerging use of large language models in academic peer review. They argue that LLMs can usefully assist with grammar, clarity checks, and literature searches, but that the evaluative core of peer review — assessing novelty, methodological soundness, and significance — remains irreducibly human. The authors propose a framework for transparent disclosure when AI tools are used in the review process and call on publishers to develop consistent policies.
