Special feature: Women in Engineering — a Materia survey

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Materia publishes a survey of gender representation in its authorship, reviewing, and editorial data since the journal's founding. The data show that the proportion of female corresponding authors has risen from 18% (2014) to 34% (2025), while female reviewers have increased from 22% to 41% over the same period. The editors acknowledge that parity remains distant and outline measures to accelerate progress, including active recruitment of female reviewers and editors and an annual public report on diversity metrics.
